Land claim part of Oklahoma tribe's casino strategy

printer friendly
The Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma hopes a land claim will prompt the state of Ohio to negotiate for a Class III gaming compact.

The tribe has detailed its claim but has not filed a lawsuit. The tribe wants to talk with Ohio attorney general Jim Petro in hopes of reaching a settlement.

Tribes have used land claims to seek gaming rights in several states. The Seneca Nation settled its claim with New York for three casinos, including two located off the reservation. Tribes in New York, Oklahoma, Michigan and other states are pursuing similar deals.
