BIA publishes rules for Section 20 gaming acquisitions

printer friendly
The Bureau of Indian Affairs published its proposed Section 20 land-into-trust regulations in the Federal Register today.

The rules describe how the BIA will take land into trust for gaming purposes. Gaming is generally barred on lands acquired after October 17, 1988, unless the acquisition meets one of four exceptions contained in Section 20 of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

For those acquisitions that don't meet any of the exceptions, the BIA must gain the concurrence of the state governor before taking the land into trust.

Comments are being accepted until December 4.
