Seneca Nation works on casino expansion

The Seneca Nation of New York is starting a project to expand its off-reservation casino in Niagara Falls.

The tribe is demolishing abandoned houses and old businesses next to the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel. About 22 acres will be freed up for the tribe to develop.

The facility opened on December 31, 2001. It was built on 50 acres that the tribe took into trust under a land claim settlement.

The tribe was the first in the nation to successfully utilize the land claim settlement exception in the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. Land for a second off-reservation casino in Buffalo was taken into trust under the same settlement.
