Oneida Nation accused of discrimination at casino

printer friendly
The Oneida Nation of New York discriminates against non-Indian employees, a lawsuit claims.

Marcus Smith worked at the bingo hall at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino. He claims he was fired by the Indian manager because he complained of improper treatment.

Smith is now suing two tribal subsidiaries. He says they are not immune from lawsuit, unlike the tribe itself.

The tribe has countered that Smith was employed by the tribal government, which is protected by sovereign immunity.
