Twenty-Nine Palms Band delays casino work

The Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians has delayed construction of its casino due to the discovery of an endangered species.

The tribe was moving forward with plans for the Nuwu Casino Resort and RV Park when tortoises were found at the 160-acre gaming site. A new wildlife habitat conservation plan is being prepared to address all endangered species.

The delay affects the groundbreaking and casino opening by 30 to 60 days, a spokesperson said.
