Non-recognized tribe seeks casino in Catskills

printer friendly
The Western Mohegan Indian Tribe and Nation says it doesn't need federal recognition to open a casino in New York.

The group, whose leader was convicted of submitting false documents to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, wants to build a casino in the Catskills, about 90 minutes north of New York City. Other federally recognized tribes have sought casinos there.

Two villages are backing the proposal for a resort with a large hotel, multiple restaurants, retail space and a theater. The tribe believes it can gain approval for the facility through the state.
