Soo Tribe's casino in Detroit to open August 29

The commercial casino that is majority owned by the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians will open on August 29, earlier than anticipated.

The Greektown Casino in Detroit has been operating in a temporary facility and tribe has been spending $500 million on a permanent home amid a bankruptcy reorganization. The casino's 400-room hotel, however, probably won't be ready until January.

The tribe laid off 89 employees at the casino after filing for bankruptcy protection.
