Gaming opponents try to delay Gun Lake casino

printer friendly
Opponents of Indian gaming in Michigan are making a last-ditch attempt to block the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians, also known as the Gun Lake Tribe, from a casino.

Michigan Gambling Opposition lost rulings in the district court and the appeals court. The group is now trying to stay the latest decision in hopes of taking the case to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The tribe and the Department of Justice oppose the stay. They want the Bureau of Indian Affairs to take 147 acres in trust for the tribe.

Gaming opponents in Michigan lost similar cases involving the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians and the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Pottawatomi Indians. The Pokagon Band finally opened its casino a year ago this month and the Nottawaseppi Band is on track for an opening in the summer of 2009.
