Pascua Yaqui Tribe sues to shut down poker room

printer friendly

The Pascua Yaqui Tribe of Arizona went to court on Tuesday to shut down a private poker room.

The tribe says Club Royale violates state laws against gambling and interferes with its two casinos. The tribe's assistant attorney general says attendance at poker games has dropped since Club Royale opened about a month ago.

"Speaking with our director of poker and the poker supervisors, a lot of the regular poker players disappeared at around the time this card room opened," Kimberly Van Amburg told The Arizona Daily Star.

Club Royale claims to have nearly 500 members, who pay a fee to join the club and pay a fee for a round of poker. The club says players compete against other players.
