Poarch Band eyes slot machines at racetracks

The Poarch Band of the Creek Indians has purchased controlling interests in two dog tracks in Alabama with the hopes of adding slot machines and table games to the facilities.

The tribe purchased 65 percent of the Mobile Greyhound Park, in Alabama, and 65 percent of the Pensacola Greyhound Track, in Florida. The facilities will be operated under their respective state laws.

"The dog tracks would be a strictly commercial operation so whatever taxes are in place within each state, those taxes would be paid to the operation and will stay with the state," Jay Dorris, the CEO of the Poarch Creek Indian Gaming Authority, told Fox 10 TV.

The tribe hopes to add slot machines and poker games to the facilities, according to the chairman of the Mobile County Racing Commission. Slot machines and poker are not legal in Alabama. In Florida, slot machines and poker games are allowed in the southern part of state
