Kickapoo Tribe contests former casino manager

printer friendly
The Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas is asking a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed by a former employee at the Golden Eagle Casino.

The tribe is raising a sovereign immunity defense to the lawsuit by Robert Nanomantube. The tribe also says Nanomantube failed to exhaust his tribal remedies, citing a lawsuit pending in tribal court.

Nanomantube served as acting manager of the casino. He says the tribe violated its Indian preference policy by hiring a non-Indian for the position.

Nanomantube is a Kickapoo descendants but is not a member of the tribe. The tribe says the preference policy didn't apply in his situation.
