Mashantucket Tribe charges sales tax at casino

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut started charging a sales tax at Foxwoods Resort Casino and MGM Grand at Foxwoods.

The 1 percent tribal tax is added to the state's 6 percent tax rate. It covers merchandise sold at retail outlets and hotel room charges.

News of the tax came as a surprise to Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who plans to review the issue. He said the tribe might be confusing customers.

The tribe does not expect substantial amounts of revenue from the tax, a casino official said. It comes as the tribe seeks to renegotiate at least $1.45 billion in debt.
