Seneca Nation breaks ground on bigger casino

printer friendly

The Seneca Nation broke ground on an $8 million expansion of its off-reservation casino in Buffalo, New York.

The expansion will add 6,500 square-feet to the temporary Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino and double the number of slot machines at the facility. Work is expected to be completed in early spring 2010.

The casino has been the subject of litigation. Opponents say the off-reservation site does not qualify for gaming under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

So far, the courts have ruled in the tribe's favor, although litigation continues. But other factors, including the economy, led the tribe to stop work on a $333 million permanent facility.
