Mishewal Wappo Tribe not thinking about casino for now

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

The Mishewal Wappo Tribe of California has no plans for a casino and won't think about one until regaining federal recognition, chairman Scott Gabaldon said.

The tribe was terminated by an act of Congress in 1959. But the Interior Department failed to abide by the law, the tribe said in a lawsuit that was filed last year.

"We are trying to get back what was taken from us," Gabaldon told The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat.

The federal government is seeking to dismiss the lawsuit but settlement talks are reportedly underway.
