South Dakota bill seeks more review of compacts

Thursday, February 18, 2010

South Dakota tribes are opposing a bill that would require legislative approval of all tribal-state gaming compacts.

Tribal leaders said the bill will complicate an already difficult process. They cited failed attempts to negotiate new compacts with Gov. Mike Rounds (R), who has refused to come to the table.

Senate Republican Leader Dave Knudson (R), a gaming opponent, backs the bill. He is seeking the Republican nomination for governor.

The South Dakota State Affairs Committee considered the bill yesterday but deadlocked 4-4 on a series of votes. The committee will meet again on Friday.
