Michigan tribe working on school tuition waiver

An agreement on a tuition waiver between the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe and Central Michigan University is expected to be announced Friday.
Under the Washington Treaty of 1836 , all Indian students are to receive education by the state. In 1976, the Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver was passed to ensure that students who reside in Michigan for at least a year and have at least one-quarter Indian blood receive a tuition waiver at public universities in the state.
But some students say CMU is ignoring the treaty by imposing requirements not found in the law. The tribe has been working on a solution.
