Voting problems reported by South Dakota Indians
Thursday, June 3, 2004

South Dakota state officials are investigating complaints that Indian voters were turned away from the polls on Tuesday.

Complaints originated from the counties of Buffalo, Dewey, Shannon and Todd. All are located within reservations and have significant Indian populations.

Turnout for Tuesday's special election was a record 56 percent. But according to Secretary of State, Indian voter participation was as low as 30 percent.

Nevertheless, Indian voters picked Democrat Stephanie Herseth over Republican Larry Diedrich by wide margins. Herseth will be sworn in today to serve the remainder of Bill Janklow's term. She will face Diedrich again in November to fight for a full two-year term.
