Navajo Nation seeks $900M for water settlement

Representatives of the Navajo Nation met with Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-New Mexico) on Monday.

Navajo leaders pressed Bingaman for help in securing $900 million in federal funds to implement water projects tied to a settlement of the tribe's water rights in the San Juan Basin. They said they are getting lukewarm signals from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The tribe, the state and the federal government announced the settlement earlier this year. Under the deal, the tribe would get 322,000 acre-feet a year and $900 million in public works projects, including a water pipeline.
