Hearings set in response to Indian voter complaints
Thursday, July 8, 2004

Two hearings have been scheduled in response to complaints by Indian voters in South Dakota.

Some Indians said they were turned away from the polls on June 1. They cited confusion over a new state law that requires a photo ID in order to cast a vote.

To consider possible changes in advance of the November 2 election, the state Board of Elections will hold a rules hearing. A date has not been set.

Separately, the state Legislature's State-Tribal Relations Committee will hold a hearing July 15 to address the complaints. Some tribal leaders and other advocates are calling for the repeal of the ID law, saying it hurts Indians who lack tribal, state or other forms of ID.
