Renzi wins endorsement of Navajo Nation Council
Tuesday, October 19, 2004
Rep. Rick Renzi (R-Arizona) won the endorsement of the Navajo Nation Council as a new poll shows he leads Democrat Paul Babbitt by a whopping 23 points.
"This endorsement is a tremendous honor, and I am humbled by the strongsupport we have received on the Navajo Nation," Renzi said. "With the full backing of the Navajo Nation Council, we will work together toward a healthier, more prosperous future for the Dine. United in our efforts, we will build upon our record of achievements and continue to provide for improved housing and roads, modern schools, increased law-enforcement resources, new hospitals and a veterans clinic on the Navajo Nation."
Renzi actively sought the council's endorsement and has made several trips to the reservation, which he represents along with other tribes in Arizona. He has fought for more funding for the Indian Health Service and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Rival Babbitt also targeted Navajo votes but the poll from the Northern Arizona University shows him lagging far behind Renzi. The poll showed that Babbit's support dropped significantly in the past month, from only 11 points behind to now 23 points behind.
