Ralph Reed paid $4.1M to oppose tribes

Conservative Christian activist Ralph Reed was paid $4.1 million in tribal funds to oppose tribes, Mother Jones reports.
Ralph Reed, former director of the Christian Coalition, received the money in 2001 and 2002. He was paid through Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff and public relations consultant Michael Scanlon, whose tribal activities are under investigation by the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, federal agencies and a grand jury.
Reed denies knowing the money came from a tribal source. According to press reports, the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana gave money to Abramoff/Scanlon before it was funneled to Reed.
According to press reports, Reed organized efforts against the Tigua Tribe of Texas, whose casino was in legal limbo. Abramoff and Scanlon then offered their services to the Tiguas to help the casino reopen.
Reed also organized efforts against the Jena Band of Choctaws, who are seeking a casino in Louisiana, and the Poarch Band of Creek Indians in Alabama, who are looking to expand their gaming operation. The Coushattas opposed both efforts.
Abramoff and Scanlon are linked to House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas). Tribal leaders have said they were told their donations would gain them favor before DeLay.
