Jodi Rave: Native veterans denied home loans

The Native Veterans Home Loan Program has failed to provide homes for Native veterans who want to live on reservations, Jodi Rave Lee reports.
The program was authorized by the Veterans Affairs Department in 1993 but only about 50 out of 200,000 eligible Native veterans have qualified. "It was predestined to fail," David DeHorse says. "I'd say 52 loans is a failure."
The program limits home loans on trust lands to $80,000. When other costs are factored in, Native veterans are left with $45,000 for home construction, DeHorse says.
Veterans who build off reservation can qualify for loans up to $240,000.
