Tribe blasts BIA for lack of Si Tanka University funds

The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe blasted the Bureau of Indian Affairs on Friday for not providing federal funds to Si Tanka University.
Chairman Harold Frazier said the BIA reneged on an agreement to release funds for the Eagle Butte campus of Si Tanka. Eagle Butte is located on the reservation.
But the BIA said the tribe never provided information it needed to provide the "471" funds. As a result, the tribe says the Eagle Butte campus and the Huron campus, located off-reservation, may close by the end of the semester.
Si Tanka was receiving BIA funds for its Eagle Butte campus until it acquired the former Huron University as an off-reservation campus. The acquisition dropped the Native student enrollment below 51 percent, a requirement of the 471 program.
