Monday, May 2, 2005

The mayor of Minneapolis has declared Friday to be Clyde H. Bellecourt Day in honor of the co-founder of the American Indian Movement.

Bellecourt, 68, will be honored at a ceremony at the Minneapolis Convention Center where singer Bonnie Raitt will perform. At the event, a total of $60,000 from the new Clyde H. Bellecourt Scholarship will be awarded to six Indian high school graduates.

On Saturday, a traditional powwow will be held at the center. The powwow is free and open to the public.

Bellecourt is a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe.
