Shinnecock Nation runs ads in support of land claim
Wednesday, June 15, 2005

The Shinnecock Nation of New York began running radio and television ads on Tuesday to support its billion-dollar land claim in the Hamptons of Long Island.

The campaign will appear on CNN, Fox News, NY1, WCBS-AM, WINS-AM, and during NBC's "Meet the Press," ABC's "This Week" and CBS's "Face the Nation" programs, the Associated Press reported. "It's time for New York state to respect the first New Yorkers," the television ad states.

The tribe plans to file the lawsuit for 3,600 acres in federal court today. A second lawsuit for a much larger swath of land is expected later. The land is among the priciest real estate in the nation but the claims aren't expect to affect property values, according to real estate agents.

The tribe is recognized by the state and its application for federal recognition is on the "ready" list at the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
