Trust workgroup to outline Cobell settlement goals

The tribal trust reform workgroup will announce a set of principles intended to settle the Cobell v. Norton trust fund lawsuit at a press conference in Washington, D.C., on Monday.

Lead plaintiff Elouise Cobell will join Tex Hall, the outgoing president of the National Congress of American Indians, and Jim Gray, the president of the Intertribal Trust Fund Monitoring Association, at the National Press Club. Also appearing will be Sharon Clahchischilliage, the executive director of the Navajo Nation Washington Office, and John Echohawk, the executive director of the Native American Rights Fund.

The principles arose out of four months of intensive work by the workgroup. NCAI and ITMA held four meetings throughout Indian Country to draft legislation that would settle the Cobell case and fix the broken trust.

The press conference takes place at 1:30pm.
