Tribe's lawsuit claims pricey Hamptons properties

The Shinnecock Nation of New York filed a lawsuit this week claiming ownership 3,600 acres of pricey real estate in the Hamptons of Long Island.

The properties at issue are currently assessed at $1.7 billion, the tribe said in its complaint [PDF]. With back rent and interest, the claim would be the largest, in terms of dollar value, in history.

The tribe's 800-acre reservation is surrounded by multimillion-dollar properties owned by celebrities and some of the world's wealthiest people.
