Another hearing on Abramoff lobbying scandal

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will be holding its third hearing on the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal on Wednesday. The witness list includes representatives of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and people connected to Abramoff [Draft].

Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) has been investigating the activities of Abramoff and his Republican allies in Washington. He says tribes paid excessive fees for questionable services.

The hearing will look into two of Abramoff's associates -- GOP anti-tax activist Grover Norquist and former Christian Coalition director Ralph Reed. Both took money from Abramoff's wealthy tribal clients -- including the Choctaws -- in order to fight gaming proposals by other tribes.

The probe has put attention on the $19 billion Indian gaming industry, some of which tribal leaders say is unwarranted. "A lot of people focus on the Abramoff issue. Most of us folks don't know Abramoff, never met him," Ernie Stevens Jr., the chairman of the Indian Gaming Association, told Copley News Service.
