Shinnecock claim influenced by Oneida Nation decision
Monday, June 27, 2005

Although in the works for decades, the Shinnecock Nation of New York filed its land claim earlier this month in response to the U.S. Supreme Court's recent decision in the Oneida Nation case.

The court said the Oneidas couldn't "unilaterally" assert sovereignty over its land claim area. The decision could affect the Shinnecocks and their quest for a casino, a lawyer for the tribe said.

The tribe is seeking 3,600 acres in the Hamptons of Long Island, where some of the priciest real estate in the world is located. The claim is being backed by wealthy investors who want to help the tribe with a casino.
