Rehnquist slaps down retirement rumors

Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist issued an unusual public statement on Thursday night refuting "speculation and unfounded rumors" that he is about to retire from the U.S. Supreme Court.
"I want to put to rest the speculation and unfounded rumors of my imminent retirement. I am not about to announce my retirement," he said. "I will continue to perform my duties as Chief Justice as long as my health permits." The statement was issued by his family, rather than through the court, which later confirmed it.
Rehnquist, 80, has been widely rumored to leave due to his health status. He underwent surgery for thyroid cancer last fall, missed oral arguments for two Indian law cases and other cases and, as recently as this week, was hospitalized.
The announcement appears to settle lingering questions over the court's makeup. Justice Sandra Day O'Connor announced her resignation on July 1.
