Red Lake chair assesses media coverage of tragedy

Floyd Jourdain Jr., the chairman of the Red Lake Nation in Minnesota, said he was right to limit media access to the reservation after the March 21, 2005, shootings.

The tribe dictated where reporters could go on the reservation. People who violated the policy were kicked off. Some people had their equipment confiscated.

The policy was eventually lifted but Jourdain said he was looking out for the tribe's interests. He said most reporters weren't sensitive to the tragedy and tribal culture.

Jourdain made his comments at a panel discussion at the Native American Journalists Association conference in Lincoln, Nebraska.
