NCAA exempts FSU 'Seminoles' from mascot policy

Florida State University won an exemption from the NCAA's policy on Indian mascots on Tuesday.

The NCAA said the school can use its "Seminoles" mascot in post-season tournaments because the Seminole Tribe of Florida supports it. The Seminole Nation of Oklahoma also said it won't oppose the mascot.

The decision was welcomed in Florida, where furor erupted after the policy was announced earlier this month. "We consider it an honor that the Florida State University wants to be associated with the Seminole Tribe of Florida," Max Osceola, a Seminole tribal council member said, according to The Tallahassee Democrat.

So far, FSU is the only school to win its appeal of the NCAA policy. Administrators threatened legal action if they weren't allowed to use the "Seminoles" at playoffs or host future tournaments.
