Turtle Mountain chair won't oppose 'Fighting Sioux'
Friday, September 2, 2005

The chairman of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians said he has no problem with the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota.

Kevin Davis, an alumnus and a co-founder of the UND Indian Association, said he thinks the school has done a good job in its use of the Indian head logo and name. "They have used it as an opportunity to promote awareness of the culture of all Indian nations, not just the Sioux," he said in a statement quoted by The Grand Forks Herald.

Davis, however, said he agreed to allow Jay Taken Alive, a Standing Rock Sioux Tribe council member, to present opposition to the nickname to the Turtle Mountain council. The council could end up taking action on "Fighting Sioux."

The Spirit Lake Nation council is expected to pass a resolution against the name today. Tribal members voted to oppose "Fighting Sioux," saying it is disrespectful to Sioux people.
