Spirit Lake Nation tables vote on 'Fighting Sioux'

The Spirit Lake Nation council tabled a vote on a resolution to oppose the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota.

The council was expected to pass a resolution against the name since tribal members voted against the continued use of the "Sioux" name and an Indian head logo. But a council member said tribal leaders will likely meet with UND officials before a decision is made.

The Spirit Lake Nation is the only tribe to have voiced some form of support for controversial name. Other Sioux tribes oppose it.
