Trust fund records dumped by federal records agency
Thursday, September 22, 2005

The National Archives and Records Administration, the federal agency charged with preserving records, has launched a probe to determine why Indian trust fund records were dumped in trash bins in Washington, D.C.

NARA staff found the dumped documents in two separate areas. Some of the documents were Bureau of Indian Affairs records dating to the 1950s.

According to an attorney for NARA, the dumping "may be intentional acts aimed at unlawfully removing or disposing of permanent records from the Interior Department," the Associated Press reported.
