IHS to improve cancer testing, prevention and care

The Indian Health Service is undertaking initiatives to improve screening, prevention and care in certain areas of Indian Country, U.S. Medicine reports.
Overall, cancer rates among American Indians and Alaska Natives are lower than rates among the general population. But among tribal members in the Northern Plains and Alaska, the rates of certain cancers are higher due to tobacco use and other factors.
To address the issue, IHS is targeting the areas where cancer screening, prevention and care are most needed. The efforts include early detection and treatment, tobacco cessation and promotion of healthier lifestyles.
