Supreme Court relists Prairie Band car tag case
Wednesday, December 7, 2005

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday relisted the petition in the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation's car tag case against the state of Kansas.

The petition has been pending since September. But the court delayed consideration of the case amid the installation of new Chief Justice John G. Roberts and resolution of the tribe's gasoline tax case.

Now that the court ruled on the tax case -- going against the tribe -- the justices are now ready to consider the car tag case. The petition will be reviewed at a closed-door meeting on Friday. An announcement on whether to take the case will come next week.

The tribe had won the case at the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. In a unanimous decision, the court said the state of Kansas had to recognize the tribe's car tags.
