BIA runs out of money to pay for welfare programs

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has run out of money to pay for tribal welfare programs, The Farmington Daily Times reports.
The BIA has a shortfall of $15 million affecting tribes across the nation, a spokesperson said. The shortfall covers General Assistance, Child Welfare Assistance, Adult Care Services, Tribal Work Experience Program and Miscellaneous Assistance programs.
The Navajo Nation asked the BIA for $1.5 million but the request was denied. "This is the BIA's Christmas present to the Navajo Nation," a spokesperson said.
