Schaghticoke groups battle over reservation

A rival group has taken control of the Schaghticoke Reservation in Connecticut and is seeking to develop the land.

The Schaghticoke Indian Tribe took over the tribal offices last week. The group ousted the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, whose leaders have been the public face of the tribe's federal recognition fight.

The Schaghticoke Indian Tribe says it will start a housing project and other unspecified projects on the 400-acre reservation. State attorney general Richard Blumenthal says any work has to comply with state laws.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs denied recognition to the tribe in October 2004. The Schaghticoke Tribal Nation is preparing an appeal.
