GOP leader promises action on lobbying reforms
Monday, January 9, 2006

House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Illinois), who received money from admitted felon Jack Abramoff, promised to draft new lobbying rules for members of the House.

Rep. David Dreier (R-California), the chairman of the House Rules Committee, will draft the new rules. Both Hastert and Dreier cited the Abramoff scandal as the reason for the reforms.

Separately, several members of Congress have introduced bills to tighten the lobbying industry. Two proposals, both sponsored by Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona), would bar former government officials who represent tribes from lobbying their ex-employees for one year.
