Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation loses recognition appeal
Thursday, January 19, 2006

The Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut can't challenge the denial of its federal recognition before the Interior Board of Indian Appeals.

The IBIA rejected the tribe's appeal, saying the recognition decision was final. The tribe will have to head to court to make it case, a step the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, another Connecticut tribe, has already taken.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs last October denied recognition to the Eastern Pequot and Schaghticoke tribes. The BIA said the tribes failed to present enough evidence of their status as tribes.
