EPA approves treatment as state for Navajo Nation

The Environmental Protection Agency announced on Tuesday that it approved the Navajo Nation's treatment as state request.

The tribe will administer its own water quality standards and certification program under the Clean Water Act. “We are pleased to celebrate this achievement with the Navajo Nation. We'll continue to work together to protect and restore vital water resources on tribal land,” said Alexis Strauss, the EPA's Water Division director for the Pacific Southwest region.

The EPA said the Navajo Nation is the 34th tribe to receive treatment as state designation.
