Six tribes win grant to study renewable energy

A consortium of six tribes California, Arizona and New Mexico have been awarded a $199,267 federal grant to study renewable energy options.
The Southwest Tribal Energy Consortium represents the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, the Pauma Band of Mission Indians, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, the Fort Mojave Tribe and Jicarilla Apache Nation. The tribes are contributing $165,510 for the study to focus on
wind, solar and wind/gas hybrid systems.
The Department of Energy awarded the grant. The Augustine Band of Cahuilla Mission Indians was also awarded $72,196 to develop renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.
