Census heads to Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation

The U.S. Census Bureau has started a complete count of residents on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in South Dakota in hopes of improving enumeration methods in Indian Country.

The test count began on Monday and ends in May. The Census Bureau is working with the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and tribal members on the project.

The 2000 Census missed 12.2 percent of American Indians on reservations, the highest rate of any group in the nation.
