Squaxin Island Tribe to create veterans memorial
Friday, April 7, 2006

The Squaxin Island Tribe of Washington is planning to break ground this year on a memorial to honor its veterans.

The memorial will feature bronze war paddles suspended above seven pools of interconnected water, with each paddle engraved with the name of a Squaxin veteran, The Olympian reported.

The tribe hopes to open the 10,000-square-foot memorial site by Veterans Day of this year, or by Veterans Day of 2007.

The tribe is also developing a benefits program for veterans and their family members, and honor and color guard programs.
