California Indians protest removal from tribes

About 40 California Indians who have been disenrolled from their tribes held a protest on Friday at the city hall in Richmond.
The American Indian Rights and Resource Organization says it will hold rallies wherever tribes are planning to open casinos. The group accuses tribes of greed in seeking to limit who will benefit from gaming revenues.
Among those who protested was Eddie Vedolla. He served on the council for the Guidiville Band of Pomo Indians until he was removed from the rolls in 2003, a move that came after he questioned the tribe's casino plans.
The AIRRO says more than 1,500 California Indians have been kicked out of 23 tribes since 1995. The Bureau of Indian Affairs says it doesn't get involved but has broad oversight over certain tribal matters, a federal judge in Washington recently ruled.
