Urban Indian clinics threatened by Bush budget cut

More than 100,000 urban Indians from California to New York face a reduction or outright loss of health care services due to a proposed cut in President Bush's latest budget.
The Bush administration is planning to eliminate the entire $33 million urban Indian health care program. The proposal puts 34 facilities at risk.
The White House claims urban Indians can find health care at other types of hospitals, clinics and centers. But tribal members who moved to cities -- often at the insistence of the federal government or to find better opportunities -- say Indian clinics are attuned to their cultural and spiritual needs.
The National Council of Urban Indian Health says half of the 34 urban Indian clinics could be closed and the rest would have to cut back services if the cut is not reversed by Congress.
