FEMA rejects Sen. Johnson's request to help tribes
Monday, May 22, 2006

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has rejected a request by Sen. Tim Johnson (D-South Dakota) to send unused homes to Indian Country.

In a March 24 letter, Johnson noted that upwards of 20,000 trailer homes set aside for hurricane relief weren't being used. He asked FEMA to send some of them to tribes to alleviate deplorable housing conditions on reservations.

But FEMA says the trailers may still be needed for the 2006 hurricane season. The agency plans to move some of the trailers to various locations but not to reservations.
