Pine Ridge Reservation shelter helps hundreds

A women's shelter on the Pine Ridge Reservation is providing hope for victims of domestic violence.
Cangleska Inc. operates the shelter. It sees up to 600 women and up to 900 children come through the doors each year. Another 800 to 1,500 women receive services from the shelter every year.
"We're a vulnerable population," Karen Artichoker, the co-founder of Cangleska, told The Chicago Tribune. "Many women and their families, from birth to death, their lives are characterized by addiction, violence, lots of pain. Lots of pain."
Cangleska also operates a shelter in Rapid City. The centers are funded primarily by federal and private grants.
Native women are the victims of domestic violence at rates far greater than any other racial or ethnic group.
