Indian mothers who use meth part of birth weight study

Indian women who use methamphetamine are more likely to give birth to underweight babies, according to a new study published in the September issue of the journal Pediatrics.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Center for Research Resources funded the study. It looked at 1,618 new mothers in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and three other urban areas.
Of the study participants, 84 said they used meth. Of the 84 meth users, 2 percent were American Indian.
The mothers who used meth had a higher chance of giving birth to underweight babies, according to researchers. Babies who are exposed to meth also have a higher risk of developing diabetes.
